The Children's Success Foundation is dedicated to bringing The Nurtured Heart Approach to communities around the world. Real prevention involves facilitating experiences of success for all children. When children feel successful on the inside they begin to think and act from a focal point of success.
We are extremely proud to have officially introduced The Inner Wealth Initiative to school communities in 2005. Children need to be stronger on the inside than ever before and traditional approaches often fall short of promoting the higher level of inner strength we feel is now essential for children to successfully handle the growing levels of stress and pressure they frequently face.
Teachers are primarily trained in normal methods of classroom management which can backfire to a large extent with challenging children. This group of children continues to grow and that continues to need more "inner wealth" than all other children in order to make their lives work. The Nurtured Heart Approach quickly brings children to a much deeper and more residing sense of being powerful in positive ways by providing them with wonderful first-hand experiences of being respectful, responsible, thoughtful, considerate and capable. Kids who feel wealthy on the inside manifest this in compassionate ways in every aspect of their lives.
Applications of The Nurtured Heart Approach have been enormously successful. Since 1994, thousands of teachers around the world have received this training and have had consistent experiences of not only shifting the intense child into using their great energies in constructive, creative and successful ways, but of seeing the average child flourish well beyond normal expectations.
The Nurtured heart Approach is also available in many communities worldwide in the form of parenting classes, trainings, workshops and seminars offered by certified NHA specialists (listed on Coaching & Therapy). These highly trained therapists and educators also bring this amazing approach to a broad variety of treatment and educational venues.
Challenging children can easily become casualties of the system. Parents and teachers typically find that conventional skills and methods that do work with the average child often backfire when applied to the difficult child... despite the best of intentions. Often, the harder they try traditional strategies, the worse the situation gets. This is because normal methods inadvertently wind up deepening the child's impression that the most reliable and efficient ways to get noticed and have energized and animated involvement is when things are going wrong.
Many intense children feel virtually invisible unless they are acting-out or failing in their endeavors at home or at school. Their experience of the school environment, one that is unfortunately all too accurate, is that the most interesting and energized responses from the school staff happen under the worst of circumstances... when rules are being broken, when work isn't being done and when grades are poor. Children love animation and energy.
Skillful personnel always hold children accountable for problem behaviors but always reserve the animated and energetic responses for positive behaviors... and they have an uncanny ability to strategically see and create positive behaviors.
Energy is the reward and when it comes into a child's life only through negativity, the child's experience deepens... that continuing to have problems is the way to go. Lectures, reprimands and raised voices are not consequences as most adults believe, but rather are rewards. What appears to be ADHD most often is simply a habitual response by the child to his environment. Medications must be reserved as a last resort only as the side effects can be devastating.
Fortunately, this situation is easy to turn around. There is nothing that cannot be accomplished with an approach that works. Teachers and parents desperately need the kinds of strategies that can quickly have an enormous impact. Without interventions like The Nurtured Heart Approach they can easily be swept into the throes of a bad year... and everyone suffers. Most teachers and school faculties are underexposed to techniques that really work for the difficult child.
The life of the average child is seriously affected when a teacher does not know how to work with a challenging child. Even though an average of less than 15% of children in most classrooms are at risk as they enter kindergarten, only one out of two of all children beginning public school manage to finish High School. The answer is not getting rid of challenging children, but rather having a way of shifting them into a new and enduring pattern of success. Intense children then get to use their intelligence and energies in constructive ways and turn out to be many of our most gifted and wonderful young people. Difficult children challenge us to find the answers and bring those solutions back to all children. These solutions are of a higher order and help all children to flourish at a more profound level.
